We're a father and son team, and we're passionate about fly fishing...especially for trout! We've spent over 15 years on the South Holston fishing and guiding the length of the river, and we've made a lot of great friends along the way. We set up Champion Outfitters a few years ago at our home in Kings Mountain, NC and started offering fly fishing gear through our web site, and providing guided trips on the rivers and streams of western NC and northeast TN. As we spent more and more time on the South Holston, we began to see the need for a fly shop on the river and decided to take the plunge. In addition to our normal trips I also offer smallmouth trips, warmwater trips, and saltwater trips. A large portion of my business is my Commercial Fly Tying business and Custom Fly Tying Service, and my specialty is Tailwater patterns for the tough, selective fish of the South Holston, Watauga, Jackson, and Smith R. Tailwaters. I got my start on the TN tailwaters long before the "movie" (A River Runs Through It- seems that is what everyone uses as a starting point to the fly fishing boom), and before the weir dam ever existed, and before the crowds of today ever existed. My fly patterns were born from over 20 years of assimilating thousands of hours on the water on the South Holston, Watauga, Smith, and Jackson Rivers, often on my knees during hatches observing not only the insects, but also how the fish feed and respond to them. Put with that literally thousands of hours at the fly tying vise and you have some incredible effective flies.
I have 30 years experience and over 20 years experience in the flyfishing industry.
